I live just in front of the beach (Pagudpud, La Union). So every morning, I hear the soothing splash of waves, fishing boats living, and feel the warm but relaxing breeze.
Living it that place was totally fun. Aqua-phobia/hydrophobia (fear of water) was never an issue to me. I remember during my childhood, my days are spent playing with friends along the shore—building sand castle, sand bowling and a lot more. I learn to swim without taking lessons.
Pagudpud beach may not have that sparkling white sand in Boracay but we are one of the cleanest and safest coastlines in the Philippines. But that was before now, it’s already contaminated with coliform bacteria.
Coliform bacteria are microorganisms that usually occur in the intestinal tract of animals, including man, and are the most widely accepted indicators of water quality. More precisely they are evidence of recent human fecal contamination of water supplies.
Improper garbage or waste disposal is the main reason this happened. And if this has no proper action it will worsen its condition. Who are to blame? Obviously, due to rubbish people who doesn’t care about the future.
It feels bad that I might not have any chance to see crabs, colored jellyfish, and seahorses. Please let us start doing something to save our beaches before it’s too late. There are so many ways we can do to help—even little things can make a huge difference.
